Whats going on at Aliya

Dear, Friend

nis.jpgIt sure has been another week full of Simchos. After celebrating Nissi and Shimon’s weddings last week, this week we were fortunate to host Sheva brachos for each of them on the same day. Monday morning after Shachris at Aliya we hosted Shimon and Mushkie Caplans final Sheva brachos. Monday night we, together with the Brummel and Tamir families hosted Sheva Brochos for Nissi and Devora Gershowitz at Aliya.

We also celebrated two more weddings this week. Devora Amishay who was my student many years ago and the sister of two of our most awesome alumni Danny and David got married Sunday night on Long Island. It was a great opportunity to catch up with many alumni and wrap lots of Tefillins. It was also nice to be given the kibbud of cutting the Chalah. Never had that experience before.

abba.pngLast night one of our very inspirational congregants and teacher of our uncut weekly Tanach Shiur, Aharon Abba Monroe got married at the Jewish Children’s Museum.  Also a beautiful and meaningful event for Aliya.

I was also fortunate to spend my Tuesday at a Chabad tech conference with one Hundred other Shluchim and Shluchos. The event was to help sharpen our social media skills, financial reporting and CRM skills, website, emails and much more.

This Shabbos we will be on our annual summer Shabbaton to New Haven CT.  Stay tuned for lots of great pics!

Wishing you a joyous and bonding Shabbos and may we celebrate it together in the Third Bais Hamikdash!

A Word from the Rabbi

How do avoid falling victim to desert mentality:

Rabbi Moishe Feiglin1.jpgQuestion) Jews This week’s Parsha goes into great detail describing the specific dangers of a Midbar (Desert). Why did the Torah, which is meticulous not to have an extra letter, spend so much focus on this seemingly insignificant details?

Answer) The Torah is comparing the desert to our exile and correlating each of the dangers with a danger of exile:

The first adjective of a desert is that is LARGE. This corresponds to a person feeling that the secular world around him is large. The second is AWESOME which is when a person feels intimidated by the great world around him and insignificance of his own religion. Third is FULL OF POISONOUS SNAKES which give a hot bite. This represents the subsequent passion a person will then acquire for forbidden pleasures. Fourth is SCORPIONS which give a cold bite and represent a person sudden coldness and insensitivity towards spirituality and the final description is “A THIRST TO WHICH NO WATER CAN BE FOUND”. This represents a person’s feeling of emptiness he will feel once he has lost his spiritual connection but he will be so lost he won’t know where to go for meaning and will end up getting himself even deeper while seeking to find solace.

What is the lesson? This Desert challenge can all be avoided if we bear in mind that G-d himself chose us over all other nations and we are here with a specific mission which can be done only by a Jew, and despite the visible grandeur of the world around us, it is all here for us to transform into a place for G-d.

The Parshah In A Nutshell

Parshat Eikev

In the Parshah of Eikev (“ Because”), Moses continues his closing address to the children of Israel, promising them that if they will fulfill the commandments ( mitzvot) of the Torah, they will prosper in the Land they are about to conquer and settle in keeping with G‑d’s promise to their forefathers.

Moses also rebukes them for their failings in their first generation as a people, recalling their worship of the Golden Calf, the rebellion of Korach, the sin of the spies, their angering of G‑d at Taveirah, Massah and Kivrot Hataavah ( “The Graves of Lust”). “You have been rebellious against G‑d,” he says to them, “since the day I knew you.” But he also speaks of G‑d’s forgiveness of their sins, and the Second Tablets which G‑d inscribed and gave to them following their repentance.

Their forty years in the desert, says Moses to the people, during which G‑d sustained them with daily manna from heaven, was to teach them “that man does not live on bread alone, but by the utterance of G‑d’s mouth does man live.”

Moses describes the land they are about to enter as “flowing with milk and honey,” blessed with the “seven kinds” (wheat, barley, grapevines, figs, pomegranates, olive oil and dates), and as the place that is the focus of G‑d’s providence of His world. He commands them to destroy the idols of the land’s former masters, and to beware lest they become haughty and begin to believe that “my power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.”

A key passage in our Parshah is the second chapter of the Shema, which repeats the fundamental mitzvot enumerated in the Shema’s first chapter, and describes the rewards of fulfilling G‑d’s commandments and the adverse results (famine and exile) of their neglect. It is also the source of the precept of prayer, and includes a reference to the resurrection of the dead in the messianic age.
